Two-division champion Jesse Rodríguez continues to win and rise in the boxing world. Here is ESPN’s latest pound-for-pound ranking.
A young boxer has been making waves in recent years, taking control of different weight categories and climbing the rankings. With his performance against future Hall of Famer Juan Francisco ‘El Gallo’ Estrada on June 29, Jesse “Bam” Rodríguez earned high praise from our panel of experts.
Rodríguez (20-0, 13 KOs) dominated Estrada on his way to a seventh-round KO victory to win the WBC super flyweight title. At only 24 years old, Rodríguez has already captured titles in two weight classes. He is currently ESPN’s best boxer under 25.
Rodríguez’s victory over Estrada was impressive and prompted most of our panelists to move him up in their pound-for-pound lists.
“‘Bam’ Rodríguez has quickly established himself as an elite fighter to watch. He not only beats his opponents; he dismantles high-level foes,” said ESPN boxing writer Mike Coppinger about moving Rodríguez up three spots to No. 5 on his list. “The latest illustration of his greatness: the way he tore apart Estrada. Rodríguez has joined the likes of Terence Crawford, Oleksandr Usyk, Canelo Álvarez, and Naoya Inoue, versatile fighters who are favorites no matter whom they fight.”
ESPN boxing analyst Timothy Bradley Jr. agrees and says Rodríguez’s skills, versatility, and performances against top fighters in and around his division make him a must-watch on television. “‘Bam’ Rodríguez is undoubtedly one of the top five pound-for-pound fighters,” said Bradley, who ranked Rodríguez at No. 5 on his list. “Greatness is judged by consistently delivering your best, and ‘Bam’ has certainly shown that.”
Rodríguez climbs two spots to number 7 in the top 10 list.
Shakur Stevenson and Teófimo López also won their fights, but both went to the cards against opponents they were expected to beat. Stevenson was a -3500 favorite against Artem Harutyunyan, whom he defeated by unanimous decision on July 6. López entered the June 29 fight against Steve Claggett as a -1200 favorite. He also secured a unanimous decision victory, but neither Stevenson nor López managed to knock down or seriously trouble their opponents.
They occupy the last two spots to complete the top 10.
