David Benavidez appeared just as big as Oleksandr Gvozdyk and fought well, beating him by a 12-round unanimous decision to win the WBC interim light heavyweight title. This victory solidified Benavidez as a formidable contender in the light heavyweight division.
In contrast, Canelo Álvarez lost the last time he moved up to 175 pounds, challenging Dmitry Bivol for his WBA title in 2022. Given this defeat, Canelo insists that he shouldn’t have to fight another light heavyweight unless his asking price of $200 million is met. However, it doesn’t look like this demand will be fulfilled. The only person who could potentially come up with that kind of money is His Excellency Turki Alalshikh, but he’s not interested in making that match. Instead, Alalshikh is only interested in seeing Terence Crawford fight Canelo, which is another fight that might not happen.
Canelo wants to be paid well to defend his WBA, WBC, and WBO super middleweight titles against Crawford. Although the Mexican superstar (61-2-2, 39 KOs) hasn’t revealed his asking price for a fight against Crawford, it’s likely close to what he wants for the Benavidez match. This is understandable because it would be a high-stakes contest that promises to draw significant attention.
